Battle of Jollof began as a friendly competition of food and sport that celebrated the diversity and unity of the African diaspora with Ghana and Nigeria at the forefront. Founded in NYC in 2020, the annual event that platformed the friendly rivalry has grown into a vibrant cultural movement, as a sporting event that wanted a greater emphasis on their roots–– Jollof rice, as the food that brings people together. With the opportunity to restructure the brand and the event, we began by crafting a strategic POV to unify Africa and celebrate pride over rivalry. This was led by concepting brand identity directions and event collateral that contributed to their successful event for over 2,000 guests for their 5th year anniversary.

BEFORE

Brand Identity Art Direction (Runner Up): The Charge | These visuals capture the electric pulse of BoJ; the spark that connects food, sport, and culture across the diaspora. Every moment, flavor, and movement is charged with pride. Through bold contrasts, kinetic gradients, time-lapsed motion blurs, dust overlays, glowing shapes and the lightning bolt as both a symbol and signal, this direction embodies the rhythm, energy, and unity that define the event and the brand that’s seen and felt.
AFTER
Brand Identity Art Direction (Final Selection): Woven by Culture
The textures of home become the fabric of celebration. This is a story of belonging everywhere: from the jerseys on the court, to the aprons in the kitchen, to the patterned couches and throw pillows that filled our living rooms growing up. Inspired by African wax fabrics and beading, this world feels tactile, nostalgic, and unapologetically vibrant. Every color is a reminder of pride within the Black diaspora, and the various lightning bolt patterns are a symbol of Battle of Jollof’s legacy.
